Staffordshire councils and police are warning residents about a spike in domestic abuse cases during the World Cup. Research shows domestic abuse cases jump by 38% when England lose a match and 26% when they win or draw. While football itself doesn't cause abuse, major tournaments can intensify violence in homes where abuse already exists.
Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire authorities are urging people to recognise warning signs and speak up if they're concerned about someone. Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Staffordshire County Council, said: "Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home. If you are experiencing abuse, support is available and you are not alone." Officers will be out in towns and cities during the tournament to respond to concerns.
