Stoke-on-Trent's former Lord Mayor has raised £15,884.49 for three local good causes in just 12 months. Councillor Steve Watkins and his wife Councillor Lynn Watkins organised a series of fundraising events across the city, smashing their targets to support charities making a real difference to local residents.

The fundraising activities included a 1920s-themed afternoon tea and the publication of a children's book written from a cat's perspective about life as Lord Mayor. The book proved hugely popular with families across Stoke, helping to boost funds for the three chosen charities.

The money has been split between Help for Heroes, Saltbox and National Literacy Trust Stoke-on-Trent. Help for Heroes will use their share to support struggling veterans. Saltbox's Carelink service will fund telephone befriending calls and weekly Chatty Cafes for isolated older people. The National Literacy Trust will stage a family storytelling festival this summer to get kids reading during the school holidays.

Councillor Watkins said: "It's been a real honour to serve as Lord Mayor. Your generosity has made a genuine difference." The fundraising campaign demonstrates the community spirit in Stoke-on-Trent, with residents and organisations coming together to support local causes that matter.
