Justin Devenny marked his Stoke City debut with a goal double in a victory over Charlton Athletic on Saturday, just days after joining the club from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline night.
The 22-year-old Scotland-born Northern Ireland international opened the scoring with a 15th-minute penalty before adding a second with a close-range flick in a first-half goal deluge.
Devenny had trained with Stoke only twice before making his starting debut. He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I don't think I could have asked for much better. I'd only trained with the boys twice and I'm still getting to know their names. Straight through the door and almost straight into the deep end. But I liked that. It tested me."
Immediate Impact
Manager Mark Robins moved quickly to sign Devenny after learning of his availability, citing strong interest from other clubs.
Robins said: "When we knew he was available we pushed the button quickly to get him because there was a lot of interest. He's scored two good goals, taken his chances well, but we've got other players who are hungry to do well too."
Devenny added that he discovered his penalty-taking duty when he saw his name posted on the team board. "I'd seen my name go up on the board as the designated penalty taker. As much as we hadn't spoken about it, I knew I have a good record with penalties and I was going to put my name forward."
