Stoke City have climbed to seventh in the Championship after a dramatic improvement in results, with on-loan defender Ben Johnson attributing the turnaround to focusing on "small details" in matches.

The Potters began the season with three successive league defeats but have since taken 13 points from an available 15. Their most recent victory was a comeback win against Sheffield United on 19 September.

Johnson, 26, told BBC Radio Stoke that the team's performance during their unbeaten run has been the foundation of their success.

"We scored two unbelievable goals, which aren't going to happen every week, but I feel that we got what we deserved out of that game with the way we played," Johnson said of the Sheffield United match.

"We could have panicked and played into their hands, we could have started going long and rushing things, but we didn't. That was definitely a statement win and that's something that has been built with the confidence of the past five games."

New signings settling in quickly

Johnson joined Stoke on a season-long loan from Premier League club Ipswich on 21 August. He was among several new arrivals in the transfer window, with American pair Jack McGlynn and Luca Bombino signing from Major League Soccer clubs on 1 September.

The three new signings initially stayed in the same hotel and quickly formed friendships. Johnson said he wanted to make McGlynn and Bombino feel welcome given their move from a different culture and their ages.

"They've done brilliantly since coming in. Luca flew in 48 hours before the Norwich game, he came on and pretty much changed the game. Jack is contributing so well with his goals and his ability," Johnson said.

Johnson, a former West Ham full-back, added that the team's overall approach has been to focus on performance rather than panic during difficult periods.
