The Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys is at the Regent Theatre in Hanley this week as part of its twentieth anniversary tour. The production runs until Saturday 31 October.

Reviewer Dave Stringer gave the show a five-star rating, describing it as a "beautiful production" that "remains one of those must see pieces of musical theatre" despite its age.

The Story

Jersey Boys follows Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons from their early days in New Jersey through to superstardom. The narrative begins with Tommy DeVito (Carlo Boumouglbay) attempting to escape a life of repeated imprisonment by forming a musical group. The turning point comes when Frankie Valli (Luke Baker) joins as frontman, bringing his distinctive falsetto voice, followed by songwriter Bob Gaudio (Toby Miles) and Nick Massi (Lewis Kennedy). Manager Bob Crewe (Michael Levi) selects the group's final name.

The production explores the tensions within the group. Tommy's poor financial management creates debt, leading to involvement with local organised crime figures. Gyp DeCarlo (Fed Zanni), a Mafia capo, is called in to resolve the situation, resulting in Tommy's exile. Nick announces his departure and Bob withdraws from performing, leaving Frankie to pursue a solo career with backing from a new Four Seasons lineup.

The reviewer noted that female characters, portrayed by Artemis Chrisoulakis, Sydney Hocknell and Olivia Mitchell, represent the personal cost of the band's constant touring and success. The production concludes with the original members' induction into the Hall of Fame and a reveal of Tommy's later connection to actor Joey Pesci (Aiden Carson).

What to Expect

The show features music from Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons' catalogue, performed to "perfection" with coordinated choreography. The reviewer highlighted the rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" as a particular highlight. Innovative projections enhance the production.

Jersey Boys runs for 2 hours 30 minutes including interval. Tickets are available through atgtickets.com/Stoke.
