Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has proposed a £1.85m plan to address street maintenance issues across the borough over the next six years.

The scheme, named Operation TLC, aims to tackle problems residents identify as everyday frustrations: broken street signs, graffiti and general neglect of public spaces. The council said the project would restore pride in neighbourhoods through cleaner streets and practical improvements.

Council leader Jonathan Gullis said: "We promised to get back to basics and put local people first. These might seem like little things, but they matter enormously to people's pride in where they live."

How the funding will work

The proposals include £350,000 of capital investment from the council, plus £250,000 annually until 2031-32. An additional £50,000 per year for five years will support the running of Operation TLC.

The council plans to combine council investment with support from local businesses and volunteer groups to improve neighbourhoods.

Community involvement

Residents are being encouraged to join monthly Big Borough Clean Up events organised by councillors. The council also hopes to work with volunteer organisations and encourage local businesses to keep their areas clean and tidy.

The authority has pledged to clamp down on littering and fly-tipping, which costs approximately £65,000 per year to clear up.

The proposals are due to be considered by council decision makers on 20 October.
