Stoke-on-Trent's trading standards team has seized over £250,000 worth of illegal tobacco in a coordinated raid across the city. On June 11, thirteen council officers worked alongside Staffordshire Police and a specialist tobacco detection dog to target storage units and shops as part of Operation Cece, a nationwide drive against illicit trade.
The operation uncovered a significant haul: 11,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, 150kg of counterfeit hand rolling tobacco, and over 1,300 vapes. The scale of the seizure demonstrates the extent of illegal tobacco trading affecting Stoke residents and local businesses. Since the start of 2026, Stoke trading standards has seized more than £300,000 of contraband stock.
Councillor Amjid Wazir highlighted the importance of the raid, saying it proves "partnership working and strong community intelligence" are keeping residents safe. He warned that illegal tobacco harms legitimate business and can be linked to wider criminal activity in Stoke communities.
