Stoke-on-Trent City Council is introducing a free permit and booking system for residents using vans and trailers at the city's Household Waste Recycling Centres. The system launches on Monday 2 November at both the Hanford and Burslem sites. Residents using cars will not need to apply for a permit.
Residents wishing to use a van or trailer will need to register for a free permit and book a visit in advance. Each household can apply for up to 12 van permits per year, with permits valid for 12 months once issued.
How to book
Bookings can be made online at www.stoke.gov.uk/wastepermits. For residents unable to book online, an automated telephone booking service is available by calling 01782 234000. Bookings can also be made on behalf of another Stoke-on-Trent resident, such as an elderly relative or friend.
Transition period
A three-month transition period runs from 2 November to 31 January. During this time, van and trailer users who have not yet registered or booked will still be allowed access under current arrangements if they comply with site rules. Site staff will provide assistance and guidance to help residents with future visits.
From 1 February, all van visits will require a valid permit and booking before attending either site.
Why the change
Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride and enforcement, said the system will reduce queues and unnecessary journeys, improve traffic management and make visits quicker and easier. The booking system will also help the council manage the recycling centres more safely and efficiently.
What is not accepted
Trade, business and commercial waste is not accepted at either Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Disposal through a licensed commercial waste facility or registered waste carrier must be used instead.
