Port Vale recorded their biggest win of the 1893-84 season when they defeated Grimsby Town 6-0, though the victory came in front of the club's lowest attendance of the campaign — just 500 spectators.

The low turnout was largely due to poor weather that had forced the original fixture to be postponed. The rescheduled match was played on a Monday, which further dampened attendance.

Goals and Scorers

Vale's six goals were shared among four players. Billy Beats, the club's 22-year-old local striker, scored twice. James Scarratt also netted a brace, while Bill Elsom and Bill Corfield each added one goal.

Beats' Breakthrough Season

Beats finished as top scorer for the season with twenty goals across all competitions. The local lad would later move to Wolves and go on to represent England at international level.

Vale's Second Season in the League

The 1893-84 campaign was Port Vale's second season in the Football League. After a difficult first season marked by heavy defeats, the club steadied themselves and finished seventh in the league — two places above Woolwich Arsenal.
