Port Vale has announced its intention to appoint a sporting director, a new role designed to give the club greater footballing structure and consistency.

The sporting director will have overall responsibility for the football department and will work to build a football operation that is more consistent and sustainable, giving the club the best possible chance of success on the pitch.

Regulatory approval required

The appointment is subject to approval from the Independent Football Regulator. While that process is underway, the club is discussing with the Regulator what work the individual may be able to do in an advisory capacity.

Scope of the role

The sporting director will examine the whole football operation, including its current structure, processes and people, and make recommendations based on what they believe is best for the club. They will also be responsible for developing a clear and consistent footballing philosophy.

The sporting director will work alongside the club's Chief Executive and will be ultimately accountable to the Board. The club's Chief Executive will continue to oversee the football budget and final financial sign-off on players, while the manager remains responsible for day-to-day coaching and management of the First Team.

Fans forum postponed

The proposed fans forum has been postponed as a result of this structural change. The club will confirm the appointment and share further details when the regulatory process is complete.
