Port Vale's head of recruitment Lee Darnborough has faced scrutiny over his record at the club, with questions raised about accountability and communication regarding the team's transfer strategy.
Darnborough arrived at Vale Park in June 2025 to support manager Darren Moore, but his tenure has coincided with three transfer windows that critics say have weakened the squad. The club currently sits bottom of League Two.
Summer 2025 recruitment concerns
The summer window saw significant criticism of Vale's recruitment approach. The club brought in players including Jordan Shipley and Mo Faal, while long-serving defender Nathan Smith departed. Rico Richards was brought in on a permanent deal but was promptly loaned out.
The summer additions included three first-choice keepers and seven players competing for the left wingback position, but only three recognised centre-halves — an imbalance that some felt weakened the squad's balance.
January and summer windows
The January transfer window was widely regarded as a disaster. The departures of Ronan Curtis and Devante Cole significantly weakened the attacking options, while new arrivals including Andre Gray, Grant Ward and Tyler Magloire failed to make an impression.
By summer 2025, with Darnborough twelve months into the role, the focus appeared obvious to many supporters: bringing goals into the side. Manager Jon Brady had said the club would need to spend to get quality upfront. However, forward additions consisted of two former trialists, both unfit, and four rookie loanees.
The accountability question
Darnborough has given no interviews and has remained largely out of public view throughout his time at the club. This lack of communication has raised questions about how responsibility for recruitment decisions is being assessed and explained to supporters.
The club recently appointed Martin Foyle as chief scout. Foyle's approach has been noted as markedly different from that of the head of recruitment, including a willingness to speak publicly about his work.
