A new safety app called WalkSafe has launched across Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme to help residents feel more confident when travelling at night. Backed by Staffordshire Police and both local councils, the app is now available to download on Android and Apple devices.
WalkSafe gives users simple tools to stay safe during nights out. The app allows people to share their live location with trusted friends, plan their journeys in advance, and find accredited safe spaces and venues across the UK. The rollout in Stoke comes after research revealed that 81 per cent of women feel they have to think about their safety when heading home from pubs, clubs and bars.
The data also shows people are 63 per cent more likely to visit venues with visible safety measures in place. Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for safe and resilient communities at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "Everyone deserves to feel safe when they are out and about - especially women, who feel they have to take steps to ensure their safety when heading home at night."
The launch of WalkSafe in Stoke reflects a growing focus on tackling safety concerns for people enjoying nights out. By providing practical tools and connecting residents with safer venues, the app aims to give people in Stoke greater peace of mind when socialising in the evening.
